Trekking in India

Trekking in the Indian Himalaya is an amazing way to explore the rich cultural and geographical features found in the valleys and on the passes of the Himalaya. Trekking in India rather focuses on the scenery and exploring the amazing places found around the mountains than trekking to base camps, like in Nepal. India is a place for the serious trekking enthusiast and nature lover, but it’s also idea for the first time trekker. There are trekking routes to suit the needs of everyone.

To the people that live in the Himalaya, trekking is not just a pastime for bushwalkers and tourist, but it’s sometimes the only form of transport from one place to another, and for them an essential part of life. When you visit the Indian Himalaya you can have the chance to meet these people whom for centuries have used these trekking routes to go from one place to the next and to buy and trade needed items.

The Indian Himalaya forms a boundary between Asia’s three main cultures, Islam, Buddhism and Hinduism forming three very distinct areas with different cultures and ways of life; it provides a most interesting background for trekking.  Also trekking in India provides you with a great adventure, the trails are less provisioned with supplies and tea house which means you are relying on camping and carry everything you need. It’s a good place to organize a camping trek where you and your support team go out and feel like pioneers as you trek your way though some of the most remote and beautiful mountain scenery in the world.

As far as trekking regions go, there are two major regions in the Indian Himalaya for trekking, the first is Ladahk and the second is Sikkim. Both areas are remote and spectacular and offer amazing trekking. Both areas are also restricted areas and require entry and trekking permits and for you to be accompanied by a guide.

Adventure Travellers Club offers are extensive knowledge and experience to be able to organize you a fun, rewarding and enthralling trek in India.

Trekking in Ladakh and Zanskar

Ladakhk, the admired and beautiful place in India. It is the most remote and sparsely populated region, a high altitude snow desert cradled by the Karakoram and Great Himalayas ranges. It is criss-crossed by innumerable razor-shape peaks and ridges. It is also described as the “Little Tibet” or the “Last Shangri-La”. It is the land of high mountain passes and the last enclaves of Mahayana Buddhism.  In Ladakh you will encounter with the medieval monasteries. In Ladakh Leh is the best place to plan a trek where you will pass through the most scenic towns in Asia. Leh is t India’s remotest Himalayan town. In Leh you will see medieval streets, Tibetan style houses, bazaars and looming snowy peaks.

Trekking to Ladakh and Zanskar can be the most inspiring trekking in the Himalayas. Zanskar is walled by the Himalayas and such a beautiful place that you have never imagined. Zanskar is known as the “Land of White copper “. Most visitors come here to trek.

The must-see places for trekking here are as follows:
The Markha Valley: It is a beautiful valley running parallel with the Indus on the far southern side of the snowy Stok-Kangri massif, visible from Leh. This place takes you through the cultivated valley floors, undulating high altitude grassland, and snow prone passes. Here the winding trail enables trekkers to experience life in a road less region. It is the most frequented route in Ladakh. The circuit takes six or eight days to complete.

Likkir - Temisgang: This trek takes you through the motor able road along the old caravan route through the hills between Likkir and Temisgang. It takes you to the place where you will see the three major monasteries Likkir, Rhizong and Temisgang and a string of idyllic villages.  Likkir is the large wealthy gompa home to around 1oo monks. In Likkir you will see the 23 meter high yellow statue of Buddha. It is the most rewarding and enchanting trekking destination in Ladakh.

Lamayuru - Alchi:
This place hosts the five days trek from Lamayuru to Alchi which is one of the toughest in the Ladakh region. Alchi is famous for an extraordinary ancient wall paintings and wood sculpture and tiny mud wall temples. This trek takes you through the high passes and a tangle of isolated valleys and ancient gompas. This trek offers fabulous panoramic views of the wilderness south to the Indus Valley. It is the most attractive trekking target in India.

Padum- Lamayaru: This trek is across the rugged Zanskar Range from Padum to Lamayaru on the Srinagar- Leh highway. Padum is an important trekking hub and the only place in Zanskar where tourism has far made impression to everyone. This trek takes ten to twelve days and is a very popular and demanding long-distance route.  This trek provides you the excellent opportunities to encounter with the natural beauty of Zanskar.

Stok - Kangri:  Stok-Kangri is reputed as the easiest peak in the world to climb and can be visible from Leh. It is about a five day climbing expedition via the village of Stok with panoramic views along the way.  You will scrutinize the beautiful side Valley and fine fascinating nature.
